Take an article of clothing, hold it, then ask yourself, “Does this spark joy?” If it doesn’t, then you should get rid of it.
Method 2: 20-Minute Method
This method involves using a timer set for 20 minutes to tackle decluttering projects. What’s interesting about this method is that it is perfect for those who are too overwhelmed with the process. However, do note that this is not ideal for those who need to deal with larger spaces. On the other hand, if you are handling smaller spaces in a particular room, such as a drawer in the kitchen, then this method is perfect.

Method 3: Minimalist Game

With the Minimalist Game, you start with the first day of the month. Keep in mind that the number of things you remove is the same as the day of the month. So, for the first day you will get rid of one item, then on the second, two, and so on.
After 31 days (about a month), you will have gotten rid of 496 things from your home. This challenge can be much more effective when you encourage another member of the family or a friend to participate with you. See who can go on the longest to make the experience more exciting.
Method 4: Four-Box Decluttering Method
If you’re looking for a flexible way of decluttering your home, then use the Four Box method. This allows you to decide how long and how frequently you will tackle the process. You get to sort the items into four groups and make a choice on everything that you think is out of place. You put four boxes in a room that you want to declutter. Label the boxes “Donate,” “Store,” “Throw Away” and “Undecided”. Take an object into the room, then place it into one of these boxes. Once you’ve dealt with all the clutter, you can process each category according to its name.
With this method, you can get some flexibility. If don’t know what to do with a specific item yet, you can put it in the Undecided box. You can also bring the challenge a notch higher by using a similar process without the Undecided box. This system works a lot like what Joshua Becker does on Becoming Minimalist.
